EXAMPLES OF A 6 SIDED DIGIPAK

When I was looking for some examples of 6 sided digipaks I could only find one professionally released digipak from a well-established artist, ACDC released a greatest hits album and because of how many songs they had they released a 6 sided one but had 3 CDs, here is this digipak and I think it is a very good example of a digipak that suits it genre.

The reason I like this genre is because of how well it suits the rock genre, the flames and typography are dark and aggressive that go hand in hand with the powerful music of ACDCs rock.

The fact that I could only find one 6-sided digipak released professionally makes me want to make a 6 sided one even more now because there is less competition and no benchmark to match so I will be going off my own back with my design and style.

EXAMPLES OF MUSIC MAGAZINE ADVERTS

In this post I will be talking to you about some examples of music magazine adverts that have stuck with me from existing research.

For me, a music magazine must be basic with not too much writing, a simple picture that stands out against the background, the writing that must be on it should have at least something to do with either the artist, the song or release dates. Most basic music posters most basic film posters stand out because of the vibrant colours and glows on it. Here is an example of a basic music poster that is effective and has stuck in my head.

When I think of music posters that I don’t like I think too much is going on and not enough actual information is available for the audience, so they got side-tracked and don’t end up getting the correct information they need. Here is an example of a music poster that has too much going on and I personally don’t like.

FINDING ANOTHER POSSIBLE LOCATION

In this post I will be talking to you about another location we added to our video to create more atmosphere when showing the narrative.

When we were editing our music video of the shots down the beach and of me and jade together, we got given some criticism where our teacher said we need some shots of day to day life of me showing that the mental health is getting to me, once we got given this advice we got into our group and started brainstorming some ideas of how we can get some day to day life shots into our video and where we can take them, Oliver was the one to volunteer his house for the film so we could get some shots of me in the comfort of my own home.

We also filmed the scene with the boxing bag because in Ollies house he has a boxing bag and that’s why having this new location was a benefit Is because we found another possible shot from this location.

In my opinion having these shots show that there is more than just the memories from the beach to this relationship and I am thinking of jade all the time and it shows that I am constantly stressing about my mental health situation.

ANOTHER CHANGE TO OUR PLAN

On a day out filming we realised something that would turn out to be beneficial for our group, because we were filming almost all our video at beaches we thought that we would need to have at least 2 beaches, so because of this we chose 3 beaches of Southerndown, Ogmore and Porthcawl.

The change we made to this was only using one of these beaches and we chose to use Southerndown, the reason we did this is because after we went for the first and second time filming at Southerndown we realised that we don’t need the other beaches because of how wide and beautiful Southerndown is compared to the other beaches.

Another reason we came to this decision is because when we were walking back to the car we found another side beach that looks completely different to the rest of Southerndown so in theory we were using more than one beach but the were at the same location so it saved us from travelling.

MY MUSIC MAGAZINE POSTER

In this post I will be talking about my music magazine poster, I had to create a magazine advert poster for the release of the music album that follows the release of my music video, the design I have chosen is a basic design that shows great simple techniques which are effective, the reason I’ve chose to do a basic design with standard effective techniques is because of how good it looks, from existing examples I know that the adverts and posters that people remember are the simple ones with basic designs. Here is my music poster.

AUDIENCE PROFILE

CHANGING OUR PLAN

In this post I will be talking about a difficulty we found when editing our music video, when we were putting our music video together we realised that most of our shots weren’t following the correct path of narrative we wanted to create, the whole point of our narrative was meant to be that the mental health from my part of the relationship pushes the people who love me away because of how distant it could make me.

The problem we found is our narrative was showing that jade was being the distant person in the relationship, we realised this from one shot where jade wasn’t paying attention to me by looking into her phone the whole time when I was speaking, this made her look like the distant one because she was showing that she didn’t want to be there speaking to me.

The way we solved this problem is by adapting the rest of the shots we had to make it look like I am depressed and my mental health is struggling because of the way I am being treated by jade it is making me feel like I am worthless and I continue to go to places where me and jade had ‘good times’ to look back and try to be happy and find calmness in myself by being on my own in nice places.

MY DIGIPAK

In this post I will be showing you my final product of my digipak, as I say again I have chose to use a 6-sided digipak, the features I have for my digipak are,
  • ·        Front cover (bottom left)
  • ·         Back cover (bottom middle)
  • ·         An inside cover (bottom right)
  • ·         An inside folded out cover (top left and right)
  • ·         CD (top middle)

Here is my digipak,

In my opinion I am very happy with my digipak because I think the techniques I have used are effective and professional because it looks like it is the actual cd cover for the album that would be released, if I see this album on a shelf in a shop I would be intrigued into picking it up and possibly buying it so to me I have made a successful digipak.

DAY 6 OF FILMING

This was it, our final day of filming, we made sure that after this day we had finished all the filming for our music video, on this day we went back through the videos and re did the shots we took with me and jade but on my own.

Also, we took quite a few shots of me in the car on my own without jade, stressing about life and worrying about what is going to happen, we took two shots of me in the car, one of me driving looking down to my passenger seat where jade should be showing that I am missing her and them a shot of me parked up throwing my phone from being too stressed to text jade.

This day of filming was the most hectic of them all because it was just making sure we had everything, we spent just as much time filming as we did checking if had filmed everything. But it was successful because we did not have to go back out filming as the double checking time was successful and we had all of the shots that we wanted and more.

DAY 5 OF FILMING

In this post I will be talking about our 5th day of going out and filming for our music video, on this day we went to Oliver’s house to film indoor shots of me on my own being depressed and alone, here are some photos of this.

Another aspect of filming we did on this day, was we utilized Oliver’s punching bag for our own creative uses by taking shots of me taking my anger out on the punching bag and not just that but showing how all of my emotions were getting the best of me.

CHOOSING THE TEMPLATE FOR MY DIGIPAK

In this post I will be talking about my digipak, when I started to plan the design for my digipak I had to pick a template for it, I had two options for my digipak and here are these options.

There is a 4-sided digipak template that is dead basic and limits you to what techniques you can use as well as it doesn’t allow you to use as many pictures as you want.

Then there is a 6-sided digipak template with more fold out sides, this kind of template allows you to use more techniques, more pictures and all round a better digipak.

After finding out about these designs I have decided to choose a 6 sided digipak so I can show off my photoshop skills and it allows me to use more photos as there are a lot of good shots that I have and it is easier for me to pick six rather than narrow it down to 4.

DAY 4 OF FILMING

In this post I will be showing you some pictures from our fourth day out filiming, this was the day where we were working on the second half of our music video getting the really dramtic shots of me on my own, in my opinion this was the most productive day as we got things done and left with no messing around.

The only critisism I can give for this day is we didn’t get extra shots just incase we needed them, we took the risk of just doing the shots we thought we needed beause we were kind of short on time so if I could go back and change anything for this day it would be the amount of shots we got.

WHAT IS A DIGIPAK?

In this post I will be explaining to you what a digipack is, for ancillary task I have to make a digipack for my album that I will be releasing, a digipack is basically a CD cover but it isn’t just the cover it covers everything from the spine to the actual CD.

I will have to make a digipack that contains at least:
·         Front cover
·         Back cover
·         2 spines
·         Inside cover
·         And a CD.

Here is the online definition of a Digipack.

FILMING 101

Here is a short time laps that Josh filmed from behind the scenes when we were trying to find the perfect shot, it took us a few attempts to get the shot but that’s the whole point of trial and error so we learned stuff every time we tried to film it.

SETTING UP A SHOOTING SCHEDULE

In this post I will be showing you a shooting schedule that my group has constructed with dates that everyone can make and with time that are applicable.

The reason we decided on doing a shooting schedule is because all of us have other things going on in our lives so it is hard to dedicate time to filming so if we set a schedule then we know not to book anything else on these days and they are purely made for filming.

ANOTATING OUR SONG LYRICS

In this post I will be showing you some of the group work we have done in our media lessons, in this lesson we printed off the lyrics in our music video and annotated them with the ideas of shots and camera angles that we wanted for the lyrics.
The reason we decided to do this is because of how much it will benefit us in the long run when we are out filming, it will be used as kind of a plan so that when we go out filming we know what we have to do and when we have to do it, we can go through the lyrics when it comes to the editing and already know where we need to put the shots.

A DAY OF EDITING

In this post I will be talking about when we went to the college to go and use the editing suites there too make a start to our video, we got given an ultimatum on what software we wanted to use, we could either stay in our school and use the Macs in school that have iMovie on them or we could go to the college in our own spare time and use the Macs there that have Adobe Premier Pro.

Last year for our As coursework my group used the college computers and it worked very well so this year we decided to stick to what we know and we continued to go to the college and use Premier, another reason we did not want to use the schools software is the quality of the software, using iMovie doesn’t give you that many possibilities as it is a basic software with not as many special effects on it, whereas on the other hand Premier Pro allows you to use a lot more tools than iMovie and a lot easier because if you want extra effects on iMovie you need to pay and downloads them externally then import them.
We split up into pairs with me and Ollie getting started on the lyrics and then Rhys and Josh we getting started on putting our actual video together to get a structure.

THREE AND A HALF MEN

Here is Rhys, he was once our cinematographer but Rhys likes to play basketball and he happened to have broken his leg and isn’t able to drive or be mobile enough.

Having this happen has giving us a massive downfall, we are technically a man down but what we have done is we have had to swap over a few of the roles of our group. I and Josh kept our roles but Rhys and Oliver swapped and Oliver became the cinematographer because we needed someone who was mobile and able to come around with us to film.

On the other hand it was easier for Rhys to edit our video because the software was on his laptop, so when me, Ollie and Josh go out to film the rest of the shots Rhys could either stay in school or at home and edit the previous footage, so because of this problem our group adapted and it worked out very good.

DAY 3 OF FILMING

On this day it was our third day of going out to film but it was different as we were focused on just filming me as it was all about me in these shots, we had to try and focus the video on my emotions in the shots to show how upset I was after being left by my girlfriend.

Here are some pictures of our filming through the day.

As you can see in both of these pictures that I was on my own and reliving what were good times spent with my girlfriend and me standing in the places where we went as if I was reminiscing the memories.

This day was a productive day as we tried to get as much shots as possible but we faced a huge problem that was easily resolved, when we got to our location we started to get all of our equipment ready but then we realised that our camera was out of battery so we had to use a spare camera that was a tiny bit lower quality but the only noticeable difference was the colouring of the camera as the spare camera was giving a blue tint into shot but this accidental effect worked so well because it showed that the world seemed different when we weren’t together.

DAY 1 OF FILMING

In this post I will be talking about our first experience of the year as a group going out and filming, on this day we did not need any actors or anyone else with us, all we needed was ourselves and a camera.

For this day we did not just use any camera but we used Rhys’ drone, having this drone helped us so much because it gave us so many more possibilities for different angles and heights of shots. Because we had this camera available on this day we focused on just using the drone to get scenery shots of the cost line and rock faces, these shots played such a big factor in our opening scenes because of how effective the shots were.

We faced one problem out filming on this day which was the weather, the wind levels were phenomenal which effected the flight of the drone, even though we managed to get some very strong shots the manipulative wind wasn’t safe to keep flying the drone any longer so we brought the drone back home and finished filming for this day but the day was useful as we got as many shots as we could so we had more than we needed to pick from.

PROP LIST

In this post I will be talking about our decision not to use that many props, we settled on using minimalistic props because it will make the props that we have used more effective, the first prop that we used was my car, we thought that using the car would give the aspect of traveling places and going above and beyond to get to the locations where he had love with this girl.

In the car we used the heart shaped air freshener to emphasise to the audience that this heart dangling on a string is his heart hanging by a thread because it is being taken away as his love is falling through his fingers.

Another prop that we used was a j2o bottle where we made it look like it was being smashes; we used this to make it look like I was drinking alcohol with the labels taken off the bottle so there wasn’t any product placement. Using this prop gave us more possibilities for shots as it allowed us to use the prop in motion to make the scene more emotional.

Finally, the only other prop that we used in our video was my phone, the only reason that we chose to use this is because of how the use of it fits with the lyric of ‘I type a text, but then I never mind that’ personally with our target audience being the young teen genre it would’ve been stupid not to have some kind of technological input as every teen uses phones and we pounced on the chance to use a phone in our video from this lyric.

Even though we had four props in our video that is all that we need, the props we used were effective and memorable and that’s all we want is for our video to stick in people'
s heads.
